The Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards (PMVA) is a high profile and national award program that awards excellence in volunteerism in Canada. The awards are divided into categories for individual volunteers, not-for-profits, and businesses.
In 2012, I helped plan the inaugural ceremony for the PMVA’s held at Parliament Hill in Ottawa with Prime Minister Steven Harper in attendance. My role was to coordinate travel arrangements for award winners and their guests. I also provided administrative support and responded to our department’s phone and email inquiries from the public. I prepared communications in French and English, and after only a couple of months, I became the main point of contact for external communications with the public.
This role gave me:
- Experience planning a high profile, special event in the public sector
- Knowledge in government administration, public service, and liaison with public
- Skills in corporate communications
